Shortcuts and Siri on iPhone
The GetDone iPhone app, which is coming soon, works with Apple Shortcuts. That means Siri, Spotlight, the Action Button, Back Tap and your own automations can add tasks, read out your day and check things off, without opening the app.
What you can do
- Add Task: type or say it like a sentence, for example “call Sam tomorrow 3pm !high #work @acme”. It understands the same dates, repeats, priorities, labels and projects as the quick-add bar. See Add tasks by typing a sentence.
- Get My Day: today’s open tasks. Siri reads them out; a shortcut can show or send them anywhere.
- Complete Task: pick a task and check it off. A task linked to Jira is moved to Done in Jira too, and a repeating task creates its next one.
- Open Task: jump straight to a task in the app.
Privacy questions
Does this send my tasks anywhere new?
No. The actions run inside the GetDone app on your phone, as the account you are signed in with. They use the same connection as the app itself. Nothing is shared with Apple or anyone else beyond what Shortcuts and Siri normally handle on your phone.
Do I need to connect anything?
No. There is no login or token to enter. You only need to be signed in to the GetDone app. The list is under Settings, Connect tools, Shortcuts.
Turn it on the first time
The first time you ask Siri, iOS may say “Turn on Siri with GetDone”. Tap Turn On. If you declined or want to check, open the iPhone’s Settings app, GetDone, Siri, and switch on Use with Ask Siri. There is a shortcut to that page in GetDone under Settings, Connect tools, Shortcuts.
Use it
- Siri: say “Add a task in GetDone”, “Get my day from GetDone” or “Mark task name as done in GetDone”. Always include GetDone; the sentence can use in, from or on.
- Action Button: Settings, Action Button, Shortcut, then choose GetDone’s Add Task. One press asks what to add.
- Back Tap or Lock Screen: Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap, then pick a GetDone shortcut. You can also add a Shortcuts control to the Lock Screen.
- Automations: in the Shortcuts app, Automation, for example run Get My Day every morning and show it as a notification.
If Siri picks another app
If you also use another task app, Siri may send a request like “mark pay rent as done” to it. Always say GetDone in the sentence, as in “Mark pay rent as done in GetDone”. These all work: “Complete / Finish / Check off / Mark … as done / Mark … as completed … in GetDone”. Or say “Complete a task in GetDone” and Siri asks which one. GetDone tells Siri about your open tasks after the app has been open for a moment, so a task you only just added may need a few seconds before it can be matched by name.
Good to know
- Tasks you add this way go to your Inbox. If your setting under Settings, New tasks is “always today”, they are due today unless you say otherwise.
- The first run after a while may open GetDone briefly in the background to load your tasks, so it can take a second longer.
- If you are signed out, the action says so. Open GetDone and sign in, then try again.
- Dates follow your account’s timezone, the same as in the app and on the website.
